hip arthroscopy experiences?

hip arthroscopy experiences?I am 16 and have just been told that i have to have a hip arthroscopy for a labral tear. I just wondered if people could tell me of any experiences they have had, with both the lead up and recovery from the surgery. Also, how much does it cost?

I had arthroscopic hip surgery back in September and I had no horrible experiences. For three years I had been in chronic hip pain due to what is called "Snapping Hip Syndrome" I also had a subtle case of femoracetabular impingement syndrome. After stopping athletics, going through four months of physical therapy, and a round of cortisone injections, my only option was surgery. During my pre-op I had gone through all of the normal paper work, they make you sign a bunch of legal papers, and then I was sent to get fitted for the brace. You will be wearing two different braces, one will be during the day, it goes around your torso and velcros down your thigh. There is a metal bar with a hinge that bends at the hip, and this will be set to a certain point so that you can't over flex your leg. This brace isn't to bad, and the day of surgery, I was able to put a slight bit of pressure down on my leg with crutches. The second brace is AWFUL, its a set of boots that velcro (industrial velcro) to a big foam pillow that will go between your feet. The doctors will assist in helping whom ever will be placing you in the boots at night. Essentially these are supposed to keep you from rolling over and dislocating the hip joint. I HIGHLY recommend that you cut the heals out of these because the are uncomfortable. I cut the heals out on the second night I was in them. I only had to wear these two braces for two weeks but because of the labral tear you may be in them longer.

My actual surgery took about two hours, I was wheeled into the OR and the minute they began putting the drugs into my IV I was out. Waking up was kind of awful, personally I do not respond well to the anesthetic, it makes me nauseous and I shake uncontrollably. But you may be different. I woke up in the boot brace, and I had a big dressing over the incisions. The incisions are only about a centimeter or a little longer in length and I had the stitches taken out within two weeks. After I was taken out of the braces, I was still using crutches for about another week. However, my case was not quite as severe as a labral tear. I hear those recoveries take a little bit longer. My surgeon wound up shaving bone down from the impingement, cutting my iliosoas tendon in half, and decompression my hip joint which is basically cleaning up the mess of inflammation that was in there. The day after surgery I was sent to physical therapy, and I had PT twice a week for about two and a half months than another month of once a week.

Overall surgery wasn't bad, it was more of a pain in the ass because it was annoying to not be able to do anything. But I made it through and now four months out I am actually down hill skiing again!

I wish you luck! And don't be too scared.

I have no idea how much the entire surgery cost, but I know I had to battle my insurance because the procedure that I needed is not FDA approved therefore it did not have a code. But that's a whole other story.
