help with back pain!!!!!?Im in the navy and in July 08 i was lifting some very heavy chains on my ship (at least 60lbs) and had some bad back spasms. It calmed down for like a week then started again. I am a small woman standing only 5ft and 117lbs and slim. I am now 23 weeks pregnant. I went to the ER twice for unbearable back pain near my left kidney and was diagnosed 2x and treated for a kidney infection only to find out later that i did not have a kidney infection both times. Now today DH went to give me a massage and as soon as he put pressure against my spinal cord it hurt like hell!!! Ouch! It feels like bruises and the pain is from top to bottom on my spinal cord. I tell my doctor and she says its just pregnancy pains but I've never had continuous back pain until now. I wake up from back pain each morning and its hard getting comfortable when sleeping and sitting. It is also accompanied by hip pain when bending, going to stand or sit, and during walking. I have almost collasped a few time due to this hip pain because they seem to just give out on me. Any suggestions as to what i might be suffering from?

~ Hi ~ First congratulations on your pregnancy! I'm sorry about your back pains. I admit with my first pregnancy I had a lot of back pain issues. I carried my son very low and it seemed to put a lot of pressure on my lumbar spine. So, in that sense it could be the pregnancy aggravating the situation with your back (though it sounds like you might have something more going on). Since the pain is so intense, it might be a good idea to see a spine specialist to take a look at your back and give you an idea of what's going on (especially since you suffered from back issues in July as well). It sounds like there could be an undiagnosed injury going on.
It might help if you try alternating ice and heat 15 minutes each. The ice will help to reduce inflammation and the heat will help with muscle tightening (spasms). Also, you might want to talk to your OB GYN about what you can take for pain relief. Tylenol is typically pretty safe. But, I don't want to recommend you take anything without your Doctor's approval.
I hope you get relief and answers soon. =)
