Hip pain: what causes severe hip pain on one side?

what causes severe hip pain on one side?i have really bad hip pain around my left hip, near the front of my leg where my femur meets my hip. it hurts to walk and really hurts when i try to move my hip (like if i were to open my hips, or turn out my legs) its been going on for 2 days. what could it be

It is probably your hip flexer. A tendon in that part of your hip. Gently massage and stretch it. A good stretch is to kneel on one knee and lean forward, bending your front knee.

It could be a pinched sciatic nerve. See a neurologist, osteopath or a chiropractor.

Do you have any problems with your right knee, where you could be over compensating, causing pain in your left hip? I had knee surgery on my left knee and it caused my right hip to hurt like crazy for months afterward because of my favoring the knee. Once the knee healed up, the pain finally went away, but I had to go to physical therapy for my hip for awhile, as well. Sounds like you could have pulled your hip flexor possibly also, but you may want to get to a doctor...if it doesn't get better in a week or so. Make the appt and then cancel if it does get better. Take an anti-inflammatory like Advil for the pain for now.

You may have pulled a number of muscles in your hip or the ligaments may be sore.
However it could also be your sciatica flaring up.
does it at all feel like it goes really tight with pain and then almost has a snap like feeling that sends shooting pain down to your toes making it a bit numb for a few seconds? if so that your sciatica. I always explain that feeling as if your muscle was a rubber band and someone stretches it to it's limit and then releases it. That's what it Always felt like to me.
You should definitely take some form of anti inflammatory and if the pain worsens or is unbearable for you definitely see your doctor they will give you the proper dosage of meds and give a treatment plan depending on what it is.
