How to sleep with hip pain?

How to sleep with hip pain?I'm 35w1d and experiencing horrible hip/back pain while sleeping for the past week or two. I fall asleep fine without pain but wake up about an hour later with piercing hip pain. So, I'll swap sides, and wake up another hour later with pain on that side. At that point, both of them hurt so I have to get up for a few hours and ice both hips and take tylenol. I've tried sleeping on my back with the top of my body elevated but then that leads to low back pain. When I sleep on my sides, I use a small wedge under my belly and a pillow between my legs. I'm at a loss of what else to do. I saw a chiropractor until now but he and my OB prefer he doesn't work on me this far along. I was also getting massages but they make me hurt worse now, so I've quit them too. Any ideas on something I can do to ease the pain or am I just going to have to suffer for 5 more weeks?
Also, I'm scared to start a sleeping aid like Unisom every night b/c I know I'll get used to it and have a horrible time sleeping when I don't take it. That's kind of how I am with Tylenol too. If I take it too frequently, I build up a tolerance for it.

It's safe to sleep on your back, but to alleviate the lower back pain you need to sleep with 2 pillows under your knees. It takes all the pressure off your lower back and in that position you won't have any hip pain either. I alternate between sleeping on my side with two pillows between my legs and the comforter bunched up all around me tucked in front and back and sleeping on my back with the two pillows under my knees.

Also, I'm not sure that the Unisom would help you even if you started using it. I don't think there's a natural sleep aid out there that would be able to keep you asleep through that much pain. I would just stick with trying the different pillows/sleep positions. Don't be afraid to get 5 or 6 pillows and stick them all around you at night to get the most comfort!

You should try using a maternity support top or maternity band. I used the Belly Bra from Maternity Belt (www.maternitybelt.org.uk) when I was pregnant with twins and wore it through the night and it made a huge difference to my sleeping. The site gives a lot of advice about coping with pain and sells the 3M hot and cold gel abdomen belt which keeps cooler for longer so that could help but please take comfort in the fact that you haven't got long to go and all this pain does stop pretty quickly after the birth. So gets lot of rest and it should all be much better soon. Good Luck.
