I know this can't be good, but I am looking for a medical explanation?

I know this can't be good, but I am looking for a medical explanation?I take Vicodin every so often for hip pain (right now I just started it again, after not taking any in 4 months, because I get shots in my SI/hip joint for pain relief that lasts a few months).

When I do, it really does help my pain BUT the weird part? I actually feel mentally "with it" and my chronic depression drifts away. i don't really feel "high" or anything, just normal, social, and mentally fit. I do have an addictive personality (I do not think for this reason or do any drugs illegally, ever, never have) so I am VERY careful when it comes to taking this medication.

Is there a medical reason for this?

I mean I do not DRINK (not think LOL) for this reason... !!
Yes, I already take antidepressants.

Are you taking any other anti-depressants? If the answer is no, perhaps you should talk to your doctor..and maybe the hip pain is causing you "mood" to be depressed and when the pain is gone, you feel better....I'd be honest with your doc...he/she will be better suited to help you

Well, it is a good thing you don't think, I mean drink. This is probably sign number one that your body is responding to the opiate in the vicodin. Usually when people start using, they don't recognize the feeling of being high and just associate the feeling with feeling good and a lifting of depression and feeling normal. This probably indicates that you have a chemical imbalance in your brain and the opiate is medicating that imbalance.

What you're describing is the euphoria of narcotics that is so alluring to those who get in trouble with the things. It's just a small amount of euphoria in one of the lesser narcotics. It's also good that you recognize it so you can control it. Think of it as a high that just isn't all that high, and don't worry about the age-old question of "How high is up."
