Use heat on the area and the best thing to do would be to get some physical therapy and learn exercises which will strengthen muscles near nerve and make your body more flexible so nerve has more space.
Get massages or acupuncture. Acupuncture works very well for the nervous system.

It could be sciatica if the pain runs down your buttock and down your leg. I have had dibilitating pain there before and they performed an MRI guided steroid injection. I had enormous pain for 2 days and then woke up pain free. It was so wonderful. Prev to this I had taken so many antiinflamatories/pain pills and physical therapy. Absolutely nothing worked.

Sounds like sciatica. Exercise and vitamin therapy can usually help.

EXERCISE: Lie on the side with the pain, put your arms behind your head, bend forward as far as you can and hold that position for about 20 seconds. Repeat a dozen times. This should give SOME immediate relief. Keep doing this at least twice a day. If this gives relief but the pain keeps returning, see a good physical therapist who will use heat, cold, more exercise, massage & electrical stimulation.

VITAMIN THERAPY: Start taking 100 mg of Vitamin B-6 every day. It will take a couple months before this does much, but it helps the damaged nerve regenerate.

If the pain persists, go to a doctor & get epidurals. It usually takes three shots, spaced out over time, to take care of the problem. IMPORTANT! Be sure the doc who does this is an anesthesiologist, as these shots are tricky to get just right, and they won't help unless they ARE done just right. The series of three shots can be repeated three times if necessary.

If after all this you still have the pain, a surgeon can get rid of the pain by cutting the nerve. This is a last resort, as the leg will then be permanently numb.
