What causes cramping before you start your period?A few days before i start my period I get sharp pains in where I assume is my ovaries(it's a little above my hip bone but closer to my pelvic area) and I also get an achy back sometimes. This time the pain is more constant in my pelvic area. What causes the pain and is this normal? My periods aren't usually very regular and can be pretty heavy, too.

That sounds like "primary dysmenorrhea ", which is the most common type of cramping - it can start 1-2 days before your period. The reason for the cramps is uterine contractions in preparation for your period, because prostaglandins (similar to a hormone) are released by the lining of your uterus to help with expelling the lining.

yeah, lol it's perfectly normal here's a description:)
Menstrual cramps are contractions of the uterus. When a female menstruates, special hormones are released. These hormones, called prostaglandins, work to stimulate the muscular contractions necessary for shedding the uterine lining. As prostaglandins trigger menstrual cramps, they also take the heat for the pain that so often accompanies them.
