Hip pain: Sharp pain in hip joint when walking? Help!?

Sharp pain in hip joint when walking? Help!?I have a sharp pain (takes my breath away) in my right hip joint when I put any weight on my right leg. The pain is sudden and severe like there is a trapped nerve?

Just tried to make a cuppa - but I am afraid to put any weight on my right leg.

I have a history of lower back pain due to a previous lifting injury, and have been told that the hip pain is refered pain?

I can feel the pain in my buttock are as I am writing this, and also if I raise my right leg I can feel twinging deep within my hip joint.

I do have slight lower back aching - Do you think this is related? and does anyone know what I can do to recover from this as I can't walk much at the moment, and I am not sure whether I should be trying to exercise/keep moving or resting?

Thank you,

Ann.

Hi Ann,
Yes, those pains in the butt can be a real pain in the butt, eeuuw, did I just say that? Sorry. O.K., referred pain? Maybe, but I think the dr. got it wrong from the start so here's my take on what you have going on. Your lower back pain is mainly caused by the shortening of your cords in your legs, it's pulling there and pulling into your lower back. You can do all the chiro you want and they won't get it either. Try this, laying in bed with legs straight, bring one up and wrap your hands around the thigh right behind the knee and squeeze together and hold. Now take a deep breath and exhale and try not to tense any part of your body up as it will impede your progress. After about a minute and a half, that muscle takes a long time to get relaxed, roll to the other side and slowly extend leg while maintaining pressure on muscle. When fully extended, pull back and roll to back again and wait another minute and a half. Now release muscle and let it rest beside the other one for a minute. Pull it back up and this time find the cords on the inside of the knee and put your fingers on them and press hard. There is also one half way up the outside of your leg that you have to try to get. Do the breath and release tension in body. Wait about forty seconds, and this time from your backside, VERY SLOWLY start to extend your leg. You should feel the cords extending as you go. If you go too fast then they will lock up on you and you have to start this step over again. Keep going until fully extended then hold position while you release grip. Let leg rest beside other one for a minute. Then do the other leg. If it gives you some relief, good, it might need it again. If you feel that you could use more help with your back contact me and I'll do my best to help out.
