Hip pain: What is causing my hip pain over the bone of my iliac crest?

What is causing my hip pain over the bone of my iliac crest?Last week I was on holiday doing some sports and my back took a bit of a beating through falling off surf boards and doing some weights.

I rolled over one night and had a sudden stinging sensation - like as if the skin was being stretched or torn. It was sharp but left instantly.

I felt it the next day as I was wearing my jeans and it has continued and I am aware of it whenever anything touches against it. It occurs when I lie on the hip, put pressure on any point around there or bend to the right whilst seated (as if picking something up from the floor).

I have poked and proded around and I can pinpoint a position on the very top of my iliac crest where if I press I get the exact pain - it shoots down my side over the side of my left butt and over my thigh in a severe burning sensation and very superficially (I would describe it as feeling at skin level).

After the feeling I will feel numb around the left half of my waste and into my hip with a vague pins and needles feeling.

I can jog and run - though sprinting flat out causes the burning sensation - perhaps due to it applying pressure to the spot where the pain comes from on the illiac crest.

To go give you a bit of background with this I have a really tense muscle in the middle of my back on the right hand side of my spine which occured about the same time - maybe its related? I have always had tight and stiff muscles and I am an active athlete. I have an ache at the lower part of my back as well ( a feeling of it needing to click)

My mother is suffering from a nerve related disorder that effects her whole body but is degenerative and first arose as pain in her hip around the age of 28-30. I am 24 and obviously the history is enough to worry me that I might be heading in the same direction.

Any ideas?

It could be a trapped nerve or a problem with your Psoas muscle - this muscle can cause pain in many different areas. See your Doctor about this or even try a Physiotherapist as they can treat Psoas muscle issues.
