Tips for sharp hip pain when running?

Tips for sharp hip pain when running?I am 22 years of age and I am living in Ireland.
I've always been pretty fit - use to do athletics and have been playing soccer the last 6 years, which includes training twice a week and playing 1 match a week.
I started training for an endurance race about 7 months ago. I just starte off running on roads and some on grass. Then i began doing road running followed cycling and back to running. I done about 7 km run, followed by a 15km cycle an tried to finish off with a 4 km run about a week and a half ago but when i tried to do the last 4km i had to walk because i was getting this sharp, strong and consistent pain in between my hip and my buttocks. I left it until last night to do any training but had to stop about 6 km in as the pain began again and was pretty immense. I tried cycling and there was no pain at all.
I don't neccessarily have the correct running shoes and I am going to buy a good pair today but has anyone got any good tips or suggestions of likely causes of the problem?
I am aware that the lack of appropriate running shoes may be a cause but I doubt it is the underlying factor as the pain is too sore, in my opinion which is probably not considerably prolific, to be the primary cause.
Any tips/advice/suggestions/points of view would be greatly appreciated. The race is in 6 weeks and consists of a 40km cycle and 24 km run, its called Gael Force 6, and I'm getting progressively worried I'm not going to be able to do it.

Since You Asked
sharp pain, is always a sign that something bad is going on, I run a lot, and dull muscle pain, even joint pain, is to be expected from time to time, but a sharp pain I always listen to, and take a day off, you should alternate days if you are running marathons, I hope that you are taking at the least a full day off, I would even stagger your days and nights here, run one morning, skip a day, run the next night, is what I try and do, that way you almost get 1.5-2 days off, don't over do it

I feel for you. For the past six months I've been treated for back problems (related to age, not running). One of the things the doctor told me is that pain in the hip is usually related to a problem in the lower back; that a hip problem is typically felt in the groin region.

I used to run about 10 Km a day. My hip would be sore before and after the run, but during the run it would be OK. I used to think it was a shoe problem, or me compensating for one reason or another, but it turned out in fact, to be a real problem in my back.

I've just completed a series of injections designed to give me some relief. I'll have to see. My point is that you should not ignore this pain, as it could be a symptom of something larger. Good running shoes will help, but people usually feel the effects of bad shoes in their calf muscles and shins.

Good luck!

i have the exact same thing. cycling is an eliptical movement so it requires minimal impact on the ground by your feet. what you can do however, is first go to a running shoe store. not modells, but like a place where someone can just look at your foot and bring out 3 pairs of shoes that are perfect for you.

2nd, try to reform your running style. the hip pain is caused by too much impact when each foot touches the ground. what i've been trying to do that works lately it running and imagine that someone is holding a yardstick right above your head. do not touch the yardstick. this will cause you to expend less energy bouncing up and down, and it will focus on the heel-toe movement of your feet, which distributes the impact.
