Hip pain: Referred Pain?

Referred Pain?As some background, I have injured/sprained my right ankle so many times that there is enough scar tissue so that it is slightly wider than my other ankle. About a year ago, I slipped down the final step in a friends house, and that is when this started.

Currently, I have pains in my right ankle, knee, and hip. If I angle or stretch in the wrong way, I get a sharp pain right on the side of my knee or in my hip. I've been told by my parentals that it's possible that this is referred pain from my ankle injuries. How likely is this?

Also, could anyone suggest some stretches to try for helping my knee and hip? It's no fun when I'm having a tickle fight with my boyfriend, and all of a sudden I've got a sudden pain in my knee or hip.

Thank you!
I realize now that it sounds worse than it actually is. It is not a sharp "omg gonna die" pain, but a sharp "Ow! That's uncomfortable, let's not do what caused that again" pain. Also, I did ask my doctor about it a few months after I started noticing it, and she said to not really worry about it.

Unless your parents are qualifed physicians, preferably board certified orthopedic surgeons, you should disregard their opinion.

I HAVE NEVER BEFORE SUGGESTED ANYONE DISREGARD PARENTS.

You NEED to have x-rays and probably and MRI (to be interpreted by an expert).

Don't procrastinate, it won't get better and damage may well be increasing without proper therapy.

you need to go to an orthopedic specialist. he needs to do tests on your back to your toes on the bad side.. this is something worse than a pulled muscle.

your parents are WRONG! refered pain is when you feel pain in your left shoulder from your gall bladder, or gi upset when you are having a hear attack. the reference thing has to do with the way our nerve receptors collect the information from the body, and how those nerves are mapped out.
