Severe lower back pain on and off..Why?I've been to the doctor for back pain that I had on and off for about 3 weeks. It's in my lower back right above my buttocks and kind of right over the back of my hips. This pain has now been going on for 6 weeks. My doctor put me on Vicodin and Flexeril, and it helps a little bit but it isn't working as well as it was in the beginning. She had an x-ray of my back taken and said she saw a little degenerative back disease in my lower back and thought maybe I had a bulging disc. She ordered physical therapy and I have been faithfully going and doing the exercises they ask. My back STILL hurts..after 2 weeks of physical therapy. It hurts bad when I stand or sit for too long, or get up from sitting. I am an 18-year-old EMT, so sometimes I have to do a lot of bending over to get to my patients in car wrecks, to take vitals, etc. but I would never have guessed I would have this so young. I'm a little overweight, but not very much, and am trying to get more active, but it's hard when all I want to do is lay on the couch with an icepack. Is this disc disease or something more serious? Any input is appreciated.

I'm in the same situation as you, so I had to answer. After almost 3 years of going to different types of doctors, NONE of them were able to help answer what was wrong with me. They all told me something else, and basically gave me the same generic treatment they give everyone, regardless of the source of the problem. I think I FINALLY have realized what is wrong with me, and I have pain in the same area you described, so this might apply to you. Look up "sacroiliac dysfunction." This might be what you have. What helps me is doing a certain stretch--I sit in a chair that has a back to it. Take one leg (on the affected side), and fold it up on the chair as if you are going to sit indian style, only leave your other leg in its normal chair sitting position. This relieves my pain, hopefully it will work for you.
