Scared about getting an IV for my hip arthroscopy?

Scared about getting an IV for my hip arthroscopy? The surgery is 4 hours, and I am REALLY scared of needles. Do they usually give you the mask before they put it in? Does getting local anesthesia thru and IV hurt? I've have litocain, and it REALLY HURT, is this going to be worse?
Oh, and pre-op do they need to liike... scrub my hip? Or do I get put to sleep first?

I am really scared of needles as well. I had to go through a local anesthetic as well when I had my wisdom teeth out. I was petrified. Surprisingly, it doesn't hurt one bit. They can even put a topical anesthetic on your arm before the needle goes in. They generally clean surgical areas after you fall asleep as well. Don't worry! You'll be fine :]

It all depends on the person inserting the IV. I'm an MA and I can personally tell you it's hard to insert an IV, takes lots of practice to get it 100% Ask for someone more experienced in placing it. You can always ask. Never hurts. Unless you don't ;D

Most operations they don't need you to give them feedback on (brain surgery, small excisions) they will put you out for. Or give you an epidural. Since you're squimish about needles they'll probably put you on the table and gas the crap out of you. No worries!
