Hip pain: How much pain should a runner ignore?

How much pain should a runner ignore?I'm a cross country runner/freshman in high school. To summarize: spring 2009- shin splints, summer 2009 - strained quad, fall 2009 shin splints, winter 2010 shin splints combo with weird hip problem (it hurts when I poke the muscles right above my hip bones) If I don't run at all I lose lung/heart strength (no matter how much I swim/bike) but if I do run I risk breaking my body. What should I do?

With that many shin splints I don't think it's very wise to go on, but if you love running I would keep in touch with your doctor. If you feel like your getting a shin splint or something else then that is when you need to be concerned.

You may consider adjusting your diet and stretching more.

you need to stop running for for awhile and get your hips checked. i have the same problem right now, am going to the doctors on moday. everyone has shin splints in my team, but we have good shoes too so yea. hope this helped (:

just take a break.

for your shins, it could just be that you have the wrong shoe. so it may be something to do with your arches because when you run your arches collapse and puts more pressure on your ankle which makes your shins and knees hurt and just creates more problems for the rest of your leg, so having a shoe with good ankle and arch support would probably be good. as for you hips, you really should get them checked. hope you feel better

NEVER ignore what your body is telling you. You have to decide whether the pain merits stopping. Contrary to popular belief, you do not lose cardiovascular fitness when you cross train -- try biking intervals or hypoxia swim drills (breathing every 5th stroke for 200M). Your body learns how to process O2 more efficiently and learns to cope with higher CO2 levels.

Shin splints may be caused by too much forefoot striking or a need to change out your shoes.
