Intense pain - hip pops out - I'm only 24?

Intense pain - hip pops out - I'm only 24?I'm a 24 yr old healthy woman and when I was 16, I went to a pysical therapist for my shoulders. They would pop in and out very easily, to the point that reaching up to the highest shelf in my locker would pop one out and cause serious pain. All she told me was she "thought" my joints were just "loose" and said all she could do was have my come in for pysical therapy 3x a week.

Well, I didn't go. And after a few years, the pain stopped in my shoulders. I can still pop them in and out (neat party trick).

However, recently I've been experieincing the same thing in my hips. I could be sitting at work and stretch my legs out and my left hip will pop (but won't actually make a popping sound) and its the most INTENSE pain I've ever experienced. I've never been in labor, but I'd rank it right up there with that.

This morning, when I woke up, I stretched and it popped out again for a good 5-10 secs. It hurt so bad I couldn't get out of bed for another 5-10 minutes.

Does anyone know what this could be? Or have had similar problems? Could I break a hip because of this?? It feels like it!

Thanks!

The most common cause of popping joints is joint friction. Simply put, this is when two pieces of bone in a joint, such as a ball and socket, rub against one another as you move. Sometimes it is also cartilage rubbing on bone.

Sometimes such popping is caused by hypermobility of the joint, which it seem you might have in your shoulders as well.

Another cause could be snapping hip syndrome. Snapping hip syndrome involves a tendon called the iliotibial band, which runs from the buttocks to the knee. When the tendon becomes too tight against the bone in the hip, it can make a snapping or popping noise. This may occur because the band it too stressed or because tensed buttocks muscles are drawing the band tight. It may cause some inflammation and discomfort in the hip as well as the knee, but it is usually treatable through stretching, icing and/or massaging the band.

This is something you need to discuss with your doctor.
