how could an acute ankle injury lead to joint pains in your knee and hip?

how could an acute ankle injury lead to joint pains in your knee and hip?

I thought it through first...
if your ankle hurts and you favor it (walk differently and awkwardly to reduce the pain in your ankle)
then you are walking un-aligned...your ankle knee and hip doesn't line up right. It puts pressure on the knee and hip joints and causes pain

Since you trying to keep weight off of your ankle I'm assuming, you are using you're hip and knee in a different manner than you're use to, so it will get tired and achy. Also, your leg isn't as stable as it usually is so other muscles are having to correct your balance with out using the injured muscles and ligaments.

EDIT: Don't use crutches or a cane, they shift your center of gravity so you are WAY more unstable, so you're prone to falling again. The only time doctors recommend them for ankle sprains is when the patient is total non-weight bearing, which you're not. Only use them if a doctor tells you to or you could potentially make things A LOT worse.

the other two answers are correct. You're favoring it and therefore not walking the way you normally do. Use a cane or crutches that will help you take some of the stress off your hip and knee and if anyone comes near your ankle you can hit them with it. ; )

The term is compensating it means changing the muscle tension and position of an injured body part to minimize aggravating it and suffering. It's a real bad idea because you over stress some muscles making them more prone to injury and lock in the damage by hindering your regeneration system. This is the only effective way to avoid a life time of "pain" http://www.hubpages.com/hub/Speed-healing-of-trauma-injuries-through-self-directed-regeneration

are favoring the injuried side the healthy side is over compensating and your gait is off due to the limping.
